Theraplay is a special type of play therapy which strengthens parent-child bonds, self-esteem, trust, and joyful engagement. Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, nurture, challenge and engagement. The focus of Theraplay is:
- For caregivers to create an atmosphere of predictability and organisation to help their child feel safe
- For caregivers to soothe their child in ways that help them feel connected and supported
- For caregivers to be present with their child in ways that communicate they are being seen, heard, felt and accepted
- For caregivers to support their child develop new skills and a sense of competency by providing the ‘just right’ challenge
Theraplay is recommended for families with children aged 18 months – 16 years who have experienced:
- Family separation for any reason or length of time
- Stressful family circumstances
- Health problems
- Internalising or externalisation behaviours, regulation difficulties, neurodiversities and developmental delays
Theraplay is evidenced to strengthen healthy child-caregiver relationships, support a child learn how to regulate their emotions and show fewer signs of anxiety and agitation. Theraplay sessions are most effective for families who able to attend up to 26 sessions.
