Strategies to help your child cope with back to School

Whether your child is beginning school for the very first time, entering a new grade or starting at a whole new school because you have relocated, your child can experience an array of mixed emotions. Kids can experience pure excitement all the way through to anxiety on the other end of the scale.

For those children that are expressing nervousness or anxiety, we found a great resource on the Education Victoria website.

The article talks about how you can prepare your child in the days leading up to their first day.

They suggest the following back-to-school tips. Of course, some of these will depend on the age of your child, but they are helpful tips.

  • Make sure your child knows who will take them to school and pick them up on the first day.
  • Help your child to organise their clothes, hat, shoes, and socks the night before.
  • Help your child to pack their school bag with a snack, drink, lunch, and a hat.
  • Place a spare pair of underpants and a change of clothes in a plastic bag. Let your child know these clothes are in their bag in case of any accidents at school.
  • Put sunscreen on your child in the morning if it’s needed.
  • Show your child where you will meet them at the end of the school day.
  • At the end of the day talk to your child about what happened at school.

Typically within a week or so your child should be happy, settled, and confident going to school each day. If you find this is not the case, we offer therapy services that may help.
