Sensory Profile Assessments

We all experience life through our senses. Sensory information allows us to process our surroundings so we can respond in appropriate ways – they are related to touch, sight, sound, taste, bodily awareness, and movement.

Everyone has a unique sensory profile. We avoid and seek out sensations to help us feel safe and meet the demands of everyday life.

At Core Kids Therapy, our occupational therapist can provide Sensory Profile assessments to identify your child’s sensory processing patterns, needs and strengths. We can then recommend sensory equipment and implement strategies to help your child feel safe, well-regulated, and independent in their daily lives.

What does a Sensory Profile assessment involve?

  • A norm referenced sensory profile questionnaire for caregivers and teachers
  • A consultation with our occupational therapist / play therapist to understand your family’s strengths and needs
  • A phone consultation with your child’s educators and/or teachers
  • A play-based observation session with your child
  • A full report or a brief 1-page summary discussing your child’s sensory processing pattern and/or sensory based strategies, equipment and other recommendations for home, school, and community activities

Who benefits from a Sensory Profile assessment?

We see all sorts of adaptive responses when children are struggling with sensory processing. Some common examples include:
  • Difficulty transitioning between two different places (for example, home to school)
  • Difficulty focusing or sitting for school-based activities and/or meal times
  • Avoiding playground equipment like swings or monkey bars
  • Big reactions to loud noises, bright lights, tags on clothes, shoes or haircuts
  • Fussy or picky eating
  • Becoming tired, fidgety or overwhelmed in busy environments like playgrounds or shopping centres
  • Becoming easily dysregulated or upset in response to sensory input or changes in routine.
